I think Red's monologue before this scene probably accurately describes what a first night in prison would be like. Took me watching this many times for it to hit home what he was really saying. The first night would likely be the worst as the reality hits you that your former life is gone, you are now in a strange and scary place with other prisoners, you're in a place where seriously bad things happen daily, all your friends and family are gone from your life, your freedom is they put you in that cell and those bars slam home, that's when you know it's for real. Whole life blown away in the blink of an eye, nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it.

The actors all do a fine job, from Morgan Freeman to Tim Robbins. The plot is outstanding, probably because it used one of Stephen King's best novels as a screenwrite. And the setting, well what can you say? Shows prison from a whole new standpoint. As of now, this film is tied with "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" for the best movie I have ever had the pleasure of viewing.
